Thursday, March 5, 2015, La Plonge community had their grand opening to the community’s first Fitness Centre. The new equipment includes a heavy duty treadmill, a heavy duty punching bag and stand, an elliptical machine (movements of skiing), a Progression Fitness gym (weights) , a bike, and an inversion Table (for doing sit-ups upside down), and 2 Swiss balls and a power block (free weights). There will be large mirrors and other accessories to be installed at a later period after fundraising for those items.
The community has identified the need for physical health through recreational activities. The adults, elders, youth and adults were encouraged to try each machine. This became a fun-filled evening with everyone trying out the machines. A few volunteers have signed up to teach everyone on the safe way of working out and proper use of each exercise equipment.
The afternoon started with welcoming remarks by Elder Louis Wolverine and project funders were noted by Councillor Angie Campbell, ribbon cutting was made by youngster Zoee Campbell and Maurice McIntyre assisted by two elders Louie Wolverine and Rose McIntyre.
A lunch of moose meat stew, bannock, fruit, and cupcakes and tea was served to end the evening. Door prizes donated by local people were given out.
